BLUEBEARD: THE MUSICAL

SYNOPSIS

‘Bluebeard’ is set in a small village in France situated near Paris at the end of the 17th Century. It tells the tale of Emile Bonnet and Sophie Laurent whose lives are severely affected by the arrival of the mysterious Count Gilles de Rais who has recently purchased an old chateau near their homes.

At the beginning of our story Emile professes his love of Sophie but she sees him only as a friend. However Emile is not one to surrender easily.

Madame Laurent, Sophie’s mother is keen for her daughter to be married and when the Count arrives and shows an interest in her daughter she is excited at the prospect of Sophie marrying such a man.

Emile recognises that de Rais is not all that he seems to be and shares his suspicions in a local tavern with his friend Hugo and the local magistrate, Monsieur Morel. These suspicions are scoffed upon by Morel although Hugo is more sympathetic to Emile’s thoughts.

Emile clashes with the Count when he arrives in the tavern and although it appears that the Count forgives Emile for his outburst it is obvious that he is not a man to forgive such behaviour.

Later that night as Emile escorts Collette, a girl who works in the tavern, home, the Count strikes, knocking Emile unconscious and murdering Collette.

When Emile is found beside Collette’s body in the morning it is presumed he was the killer and is dragged to the village where he is thrown into prison to await trial.

Meantime the Count continues to entrance Sophie and invites her along with her mother and sister to a soiree in his new Chateau.

Sophie is bewitched by de Rais and seems to forget all about Emile. She is proposed to by the Count and accepts. Madame Laurent is delighted for her daughter although Angeline, her sister, is suspicious why Sophie seems to be so uncaring for Emile.

Soon the Count and Sophie are married although he announces to his new bride that he must go to Paris for a few days on business but that she can explore her new home as she wishes. However he tells her that she must not go into a room situated at the top of the house. Should she do so she would not be forgiven.

Hugo meanwhile tries to find evidence which will exonerate Emile but his search for witnesses is fruitless and Emile is found guilty and sentenced to death by hanging.

The night before he has to be hanged Emile has a dream in which he realises it was de Rais who murdered Collette.

On the day of his execution Sophie visits Emile and he tires to convince her she has made a mistake marrying de Rais and of the danger that exists.

On returning to the Chateau Sophie’s curiosity gets the better of her and she decides to see what lies in the room she was forbidden to enter.

Emile is brought to the village square to be hung but sees a vision of Collette who warns him Sophie is in danger. With a little help from Hugo Emile manages to escape and runs into the forest. He heads towards the chateau chased by the villagers.

At that same moment in the forbidden room Sophie discovers to her horror the coffins of Bluebeard’s previous wives, all of whom he murdered. On leaving the room she realises her husband has arrived home early. He immediately knows that she has disobeyed him by entering the room. Therefore she must die.

As he strangles her Emile arrives and manages to kill the Count in a swordfight. The villagers arrive at that point and the truth is discovered. Fortunately Sophie is not dead and on wakening realises that Emile is in fact the man she really loves.
